Motor Vehicle Commission Security

On May 10, 2006 Sussex County Sheriff Robert E. Untig entered into an official agreement with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission for the Sheriff's Office to provide security at the Commission's Newton agency in furtherance of Homeland Security initiatives.

Since that date, a uniformed Sheriff’s Officer has been posted at the Motor Vehicle agency on a daily basis covering all operating hours, including Saturdays.  In addition to providing basic security for the site, its employees and customers, Sheriff’s Officers have received training from the Motor Vehicle Commission to detect and conduct follow-up investigations on matters involving fraudulent documents and identity theft.

The Motor Vehicle Commission provides funding to the Sheriff’s Office to compensate for this program.  The funding received reimburses the Sheriff’s Office for manpower costs, a marked vehicle and any overtime which is incurred as a result of the program.
